Saint Joseph's Day, also called the Feast of Saint Joseph, is the principal feast day of Saint Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary and legal father of Jesus Christ. While Carnations are the official flower of Mother's Day, the rose is the officially recognized flower of Father's Day and was selected by the holiday's founder herself. Dodd also delivered roses to any father in the community who was unable to make it to the service.
Mrs. Doubtfire follows recently divorced Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams), an actor who dresses up as a female housekeeper to be able to interact with his children. The film addresses themes of divorce, separation, and the effect they have on a family.
In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd, who along with her five brothers was raised by her single father, attended a Mother's Day service at Central Methodist Episcopal Church. Feeling strongly that fathers needed recognition as well, she approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her own father's birthday, June 5, as the day of honor for fathers. The Alliance chose the third Sunday in June instead, and the first American Father's Day was celebrated June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.
