It has been suggested that Brontë based Thornfield on Haddon Hall, near Bakewell, Derbyshire, although the evidence for this is unclear; it is perhaps based on filmmakers' use for some of the novel's on-screen adaptations.
Attempting to rescue Bertha, Mr. Rochester loses a hand and his eyesight, but Jane loves him anyway. He eventually recovers sight enough to see their newborn son.
