In addition to the American setting, Dumbo was the first Disney animated feature film to be set in the present time of its release (1941) and to feature a protagonist with no spoken dialogue.
With a runtime of only 1 hour and 4 minutes, Dumbo is one of Disney's shortest animated features.
"Baby Mine", sung while Mrs. Jumbo uses her trunk to rock baby Dumbo through the bars of her cage, lost to "The Last Time I Saw Paris" from Lady Be Good, but the film did win an Oscar for Best Score.
Casey Junior also appears in The Reluctant Dragon and Kronk's New Groove.
As the storks descend, we see an aerial view of the southeastern United States, which gives the impression that the film takes place in Florida, the future location of Walt Disney World Resort.
During production there was a long and bitter animators strike, in which half of the studio's staff walked out. Some of the strikers are caricatured as the clowns who go to "hit the big boss for a raise".
If you look carefully as Casey Jr. is huffing and puffing towards the circus, you'll notice that the name of the circus is "WDP Circus"--a nod to Walt Disney Productions, the studio responsible for the film.
Timothy Q. Mouse was originally slated to sing an ode to his favorite dairy product. It was probably cut because it didn't further the plot.
