When J and K confront the bug, it sheds Edgar's skin and swallows their guns. Agent K provokes it until he too is swallowed--then finds his gun inside the creatures stomach and blows it apart from the inside.
At the MIB headquarters, K reveals that he has not been training J as a partner, but a replacement. J neuralyzes him at his request, and K returns to his civilian life. Laurel becomes J's new partner: Agent L.
"The Men in Black" originated as a six-issue comic book in 1990-91. Created by writer Lowell Cunningham and illustrator Sandy Carruthers, it was much darker in tone than the movie and centered on a secret agency that tangled with such supernatural menaces as demons and werewolves, not just aliens.
Clint Eastwood was the first choice to play Agent K, but he turned it down.
