Gimli attacks the One Ring with his battle axe, but it cannot be destroyed. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade.

Frodo surprises everyone, including himself, by announcing that he will take the Ring, though he does not know the way.

Sting was an Elven short-sword discovered by Bilbo Baggins in a troll-hoard. Though little more than a dagger by Elf-standards, Sting made a perfect short-sword for a Hobbit and was gifted to Frodo before he set off on his quest from Rivendell.

Since they can't take him into the Mines of Moria, Sam wishes Bill a fond farewell and sets him free. Aragorn assures Sam that Bill knows the way home.

The Watcher in the Water is disturbed by Merry and Pippin who throw rocks in a stagnant pool to pass the time while Gandalf tries to figure out the password to gain entrance to Moria. The Watcher catches Frodo in its tentacles and lifts him in the air, but the others come to the Hobbit's rescue before retreating into the mines.

Balin led an expedition to reclaim the ancient dwarf kingdom of Moria, briefly making him Lord of Moria before he was slain by Orcs, along with all of his men. Some twenty-five years later, the Fellowship of the Ring passed through Moria and discovered Balin's tomb.

GANDALF: Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.

It's a group effort, but Legolas deals the killing blow with an arrow to the head.

As the Fellowship nears the end of its journey through the mines of Moria, they are attacked by a fire demon known as a Balrog. In order to buy the others time to escape, Gandalf engages the Balrog and seemingly dies during the course of the battle.

Galadriel warns Frodo that Boromir will try and take the One Ring, upon which Frodo offers the Ring to her. In that moment, Galadriel herself is tempted by the Ring, but she is able to overcome the temptation and "pass the test."
