Finn gives them the Starkiller's blueprints, which reveal that the Starkiller drains the energy of a star in order to charge its primary weapon, and that it requires a thermal oscillator, which sustains the energy on the planet. If the thermal oscillator is destroyed, it will de-stabilize the planet's core and implode the base.
