Eilleen Regina Edwards was born in Windsor, Ontario, on August 28, 1965. Her parents divorced when she was two and her mother married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa from the nearby Mattagami First Nation who adopted Eilleen and her two sisters. After deciding to pursue a country music career, she changed her name to Shania, which was said to be an Ojibwa word meaning "I'm on my way."
Twain started singing at bars at the age of eight to try to help pay her family's bills. She often earned $20 between midnight and 1 a.m. performing for remaining customers after the bar had finished serving alcohol. "I hated going into bars and being with drunks," she would later say. "But I loved the music and so I survived."
While attending Timmins High and Vocational School, she was also the singer for a local rock band called Longshot, which covered Top 40 music like Journey, REO Speedwagon, and Bryan Adams.
"You're Still the One" peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks, becoming Twain's first top-ten hit in the US. Although it never topped the chart, the song is recognized as Twain's most successful crossover single.
"Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" was written and produced by Robert Lange, with additional lyrics by his then-wife Shania Twain and Keith Scott. Spears recorded her vocals for the song between November and December 1999 at Robert Lange's and Shania Twain's chateau in La-Tour-de Peilz, Switzerland.
"Any Man of Mine" spent ten weeks atop the Billboard Country Singles Sales chart. It won Single of the Year at both the Canadian Country Music Awards and Country Music Radio Awards in 1995.
"From This Moment On" was written during a soccer game in Italy. Twain once explained, "We were in Italy at a soccer game. My husband loves sports. I don't know the game that well, so my mind drifted and I started writing."
Tim Fedewa told Sports Illustrated that he nicknamed his car "Shania" in honor of the Canadian singer.
