The largest documented earthquake occurred on May 22, 1960 near Valdivia, in southern Chile. It was assigned a magnitude of 9.5 by the United States Geological Survey and is referred to as the "Great Chilean Earthquake" or the "1960 Valdivia Earthquake." The quake itself killed 1655 people in Chile. The subsequent tsunami killed 68 in Hawaii, 138 in Japan and 32 in the Philippines.
The exosphere extends from the exobase, which is located at the top of the thermosphere at an altitude of about 700 km above sea level, to about 10,000 km (6,214 miles) where it merges with the solar wind.
