Above Saturn's north pole, clouds swirl in a distinct and stunning hexagonal pattern. Why it's that shape is a mystery, but the storm has been there for at least decades, if not hundreds of years.

Atmospheric data suggests that lightning storms on Saturn turn methane in the planets' atmosphere into carbon, which clumps together, creating graphite. As pressure builds, graphite is compressed, making it literally rain diamonds.
With a polar diameter that is 90% of its equatorial diameter, Saturn is the flattest of all the planets. This is because of the its low density and fast rotation speed.
Close up views of Saturn's rings sent back by the Voyager probes, which visited in 1980 and 1981, show that the planet's twelve major ring structures are made up of thousands of smaller rings.
