K. C. Jones guided the Larry Bird-led Celtics to championships in 1984 and 1986. The team won the Atlantic Division in all five of Jones' seasons as head coach and reached the NBA Finals in 4 of his 5 years as coach. In a surprise announcement, he retired after the 1987-88 season with a record of 308-102 and a .751 winning percentage.
For the first five years of his career, Kevin McHale primarily came off the bench for the Celtics, winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1984 and 1985.
In 1980-81, his first season with the Celtics, Robert Parish set a franchise single-season record with 214 blocked shots.
On January 23, 2012, the Orlando Magic set franchise lows for points (56) and field goals (16) in a loss to an injury-riddled Celtics team that was missing two starters (Ray Allen & Rajon Rondo) and three bench players.
Paul Pierce is one of only three players to have scored more than 20,000 career points with the Celtics, including 1,823 three-pointers.
This scrap took place in a preseason game. PRESEASON. Larry Bird took exception to Marc Iavaroni boxing him out on a free throw. The two came together, were separated and eventually Bird made his way back to Iavaroni and landed a punch. Legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach, then the team's top basketball executive stormed the court and had to be separated (for his own good) from 6' 10" Moses Malone. Auerbach was later fined $2,500 for his action. A reasonable price to pay to not be punched by Moses Malone.
On December 19, 2012, at the age of 35 years, 2 months, and 6 days, Paul Pierce scored 40 points in a 103-91 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
