The Juvenile Sprint was added in 2011, only to be dropped after the 2012 running.
The first Breeders' Cup of the 21st Century started off with two huge upsets. Spain won the Distaff at odds of 56-1 and was followed in the next race by Caressing, who captured the Juvenile Fillies at 47-1.
On August 11, 2009 the Breeders' Cup announced that it would begin using the standard colored saddle towel system. The new color-coded system would replace the standard purple saddle towels which had been used since 1985. The first Breeders' Cup in 1984 used yellow saddle towels.
