Essex Johnson played defensive back at Grambling State University for legendary coach Eddie Robinson, but the Bengals converted him to halfback. Eight years later, he was waived over concerns about his knee, but not before he became Cincinnati's career rushing leader.

Although Riley recorded 65 interceptions in his career, fourth most in Pro Football history at the time of his retirement, he was never once selected to play in the AFL All-Star Game or the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl.
