Selected with the tenth overall pick of the 1989 NBA draft out of UCLA, Pooh Richardson was the Timberwolves' first ever draft choice. In his second season with the team, he set a franchise record with 734 assists.
Karl-Anthony Towns was selected at the age of 16 to play on the Dominican Republic national basketball team, which represents that nation in international competition. Towns was eligible based on the fact that his mother is from the Dominican Republic. The team finished third in the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship and fourth place at the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men.
At the conclusion of the 1992-93 season, Micheal Williams ranked fourth in the league in free-throw accuracy at 90.7 percent after making his final 84 attempts. In the process, he broke Calvin Murphy's 1981 record of 78 successive free throws. Continuing his streak into the following season (1993-94), Williams made his first 13 attempts, setting the NBA record for consecutive free throws made during the regular season at 97.
Kevin Love set an NBA record in 2013-14, becoming the first player in NBA history to record 2,000 points, 900 rebounds and 100 3-pointers in a single season. His 2,010 points would stand as a franchise single-season record for three years until Karl-Anthony Towns topped it in 2016-17 with 2,061 points.
In 2004, Kevin Garnet led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals. Powered by the best supporting cast up to this point in his career, Garnett averaged 24.2 points, 13.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.2 blocks and 1.5 steals per game for the season, becoming the first Timberwolf to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award.
On February 19, 2015, Garnett agreed to waive his no-trade clause in order to be traded back to Minnesota in exchange for Thaddeus Young.
Karl-Anthony Towns was selected with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He started all 82 games for the Timberwolves in 2015-16, averaging 18.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, subsequently earning unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Selected first overall in the 2014 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, small forward Andrew Wiggins was traded to the Timberwolves prior to the 2014-15 season. Wiggins became just the second player since the ABA-NBA merger to be drafted as the number one pick, only to be traded afterwards without playing a single game for the team he was originally selected for. In his rookie season, he averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1 steal per game, becoming the first Timberwolf to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors.
