After retiring as the third most prolific career passer in NFL history, 49ers QB John Brodie had a second career as a Senior PGA Tour professional golfer. He was also a television broadcaster for both sports.
Frank Nunly earned the nickname "Fudge Hammer" from teammate Stan Hindman, saying "he looked like fudge and hit like a hammer." Nunley said, "I never had the best figure in the world, looking at it from a womanly point of view." But he was a dominate presence on the interior of the 49ers stout defense.
Buck Shaw was the 49ers' first head coach, working with such pro luminaries as Frankie Albert, Y. A. Tittle and Hugh McElhenny. Legendary coach Vince Lombardi once said of Shaw: "That right there is a good man ... an honest man."
Although he did not become the 49ers' starter until his 8th NFL season, and although he played a full season only three times (all consecutively) during his 15-year career, Young had a significant impact on the NFL. A two-time league MVP, he completed 2,667 of 4,149 passes for 33,124 yards and 232 touchdowns, with 107 interceptions, and 43 rushing touchdowns.
