The story opens with 007 and DEA agent Felix Leiter (formerly of the CIA) on their way to Leiter's wedding. When other DEA agents spot drug lord Franz Sanchez flying into Key West, Bond and Leiter take a little detour to assist with the bust.
When Sanchez catches Lupe Lamora in bed with another man, he orders the other man's heart cut out and personally whips Lupe for her infidelity.
"Let's go fishing," 007 says before attaching a hook and cord to Sanchez's plane and pulling it out of the air with a Coast Guard helicopter.
After capturing Sanchez, Bond and Leiter parachute down to the church just in time for the ceremony.
Initially Eric Clapton and Vic Flick were asked to write and perform the theme song to Licence to Kill. They produced a theme to match Dalton's gritty performance, but the producers turned it down and gave the gig to Gladys Knight instead. The song was Knight's first British top-ten hit since 1977.
When Sharkey gives Felix a box of fishing lures that he tied himself, Felix's bride, Della, informs him that there's no way he's going fishing on their honeymoon.
James is the last to leave the party. Just before he drives off, Della tosses him her garter, which he tries unsuccessfully to decline. "Did I say something wrong?" she asks after he's gone. "He was married once," Felix says, referencing Tracy Bond, 007's murdered bride, "But it was a long time ago."
After accepting Sanchez's $2 million bribe, Ed Killifer forces the armored truck carrying Sanchez into the ocean where divers are waiting to free the captured drug lord.
In Licence to Kill, 21-year-old Benicio del Toro earned the distinction of being the youngest actor ever to play a Bond henchman.
