A young Madeleine Swann witnesses the murder of her mother at the hands of Lyutsifer Safin, who is trying to avenge his own family, who was murdered by Madeleine's father, Mr. White.
After Safin kills her mother, Madeleine flees and falls through the ice of a frozen lake. The assassin follows her, but instead of killing the young girl, he pulls her from the lake and spares her life.
