Emmitt Smith was born in Pensacola, Florida on May 15, 1969.
Recruiting "expert" Max Emfinger said of Smith, "Emmitt Smith is a lugger, not a runner. He's not fast. He can't get around the corner. When he falls flat on his face, remember where you heard it first."
Emmitt Smith played college football at the University of Florida where he surpassed the 1,000 yard rushing mark after only seven games--faster than any player in college football history. When he ended his college career in 1989, after only three seasons, he held 58 school records.
The Cowboys traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers moving up from the 21st to the 17th position, in exchange for a third round draft choice (#81-Craig Veasey), to select Smith in the first round.
In 2010, Daryl "Moose" Johnston was in the audience for Emmitt Smith's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his acceptance speech, a visibly emotional Smith spoke directly to Johnston, calling out the fact that, as a fullback, he had sacrificed himself for so many years to block for Smith. "Without you", Smith said, "I know that today would not have been possible."
"The Triplets" led Dallas to three Super Bowl championships during the 1990s.
